Mostly all trees need bast to transport nutrients from the leaves to the roots like we need our bloodcirculation. The bast fibres grow directly underneath the bark. If you cut a ring of bark off, the bast fibres go with it too and the tree will die in a few month to 2 years. If the ring is very small there might be a chance it can build up enough new bark and fibres to close the wound. Only few trees like corc have different structures so they don't die from debarking.
